INDIANAPOLIS — Marion County might quickly get a needle change program, after the county’s public well being division known as for it Thursday morning. 

Virginia A. Caine, the director of the Marion County Public Health Department, declared a public well being emergency after a rise in hepatitis C circumstances.

Marion County had a 1,000 p.c improve in hepatitis C circumstances from 2013 to 2017, Caine mentioned.

“Such a program is medically obligatory and can save lives,” Caine mentioned.

The program would guarantee injection drug customers would have entry to scrub needles to stop an infection, preserve used needles off the road and get people extra well being companies.

City-County Council President Vop Osili mentioned the needle change would come at no extra funding from taxpayers.
